Daily Sketches

Lately, I've been participating in this daily sketching forum. They post a theme and you draw something fitting that theme. I decided that this was a good way to warm up so every morning I take about 15 to 30 minutes maximum to create or study something.

It has definitely helped in more ways than one. It's not just a warm up but it also helps me think creatively, makes me do research, and I try to make myself try something different each time. Whether it's a technique or style it's a great way to see what I can accomplish and what I'm having difficulty with.

Here are the ones that I like. If indicated, titles are in italics and the theme for that particular day is in bold and links to references if used.

Colour/Selective Colour

Celebrity Plumbers
Absurd Reality Shows

This one is my favourite I've done so far, lots of people liked it too!

Numbers Series

So last year I made something for my birthday to commemorate me becoming the big 2 - 0. Afterwards I thought it was a neat idea to create more designs following the same idea with obscured numbers.

So I started it last year but grew tired of it. I went back to it every now and then but I still struggled to create anything interesting with certain numbers (number 5 I'm looking at you). But it's been a while since I worked on it and I thought that rather than making it a lost cause I should finally finish it.

Heck, I've gotten a ton of new fonts and learned many new things about design since then. So here they are, finally completed. I attempted to make each one have a theme, typically what I first thought of when I thought of that number:

I thought of binary for 0 and 1, so I went with the inverted look.

Luck. Weird considering 6 is my lucky number.

Separation.
I had a different look for this one but when I went back to it I noticed that it just didn't look right. So I changed it.

I thought of Piet Mondrian because of the grid-like look of the number.

Struggled with this the most. I thought of "5 golden rings" line from 12 Days of Christmas. Finally found a font that conveyed some neat curves.

Plants.

Jocks/sports jerseys. I don't know why.

Pop art.

1984/A totalitarian government.
The number nine coloured green on a black background was the first image that came into my head. I went through a bunch of different looking "9"'s until finally settling with this one.

They look rather nice together.

VCA Painted Music Video Collaboration - O'Brother by The Snips

For our digital imagery class we were given 24 frames each from a music video. 12 were to be done digitally and the other 12 were to be done by hand.

We were told to keep the same colours that were found in our frames but people went and did their own thing anyway even when they stressed not to. Turns out the instructors were okay with it, so I was kind of bummed that I kept all my frames similar to the actual video and wished I could have gone a little overboard kind of like a friend's (Kasia Woronko, check her other stuff out while you're at it!) banana-themed frame.

The assignment was too much work to be done in so little time along with other more important assignments, the annoying song, and overall annoying to work on. But to be honest, the final product is actually pretty sweet. It's awesome to see what other people did with their frames (especially the part at 3:13) and how certain parts match up with certain music cues. It definitely deserves to be rewatched several times.

Anyway here are a couple of the frames I did, which are found at the beginning of the video:

Analog Frames (not all of them)

Digital Frames

I preferred my digital frames over my analog ones, even my second digital frame was put up on display!

Happy Birthday Saul Bass!

You're a big inspiration for my design work and I still look at your works constantly for inspiration. I had the idea for this late last night right before I went to bed of the iconic hand from The Man With The Golden Arm opening and poster reaching for a slice of cake.

The Google Doodle today is also a very wonderfully created tribute to the great designer. That little video with simple animations also made me realize that an idea that I've had for quite some time can actually be created with the knowledge of design and graphics animation that I've learned so far.

I can't guarantee anything final but maybe some test footage by fooling around with things. It may or may not come to fruition (for now) but it will keep me motivated and it will keep me occupied with something to do whenever I'm not busy practicing for animation.

And yes, I'm being as vague as possible so that I won't spoil what I'm attempting to do.

My brother took my camera for his trip to the Philippines so I'm unable to take pictures of larger drawings that I've done until he comes back. I even created a drawing yesterday that I'm so eager to share. I've also been able to get into the groove of creating artwork very easily lately. I must say, I've already created so much these past couple weeks than I did last summer with artwork. The feeling of just creating without requirements is so liberating.

Life drawing tonight! Finally, I've missed it so much.
